The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
